North Mayfair Bungalow Historic District

North Mayfair Bungalow Historic District

North Mayfair Historic Bungalow District is located in Jefferson Township on Chicago’s north side. Bounded by Lawrence (4800N) to Foster (5200N), Pulaski (4000W) to I-94 (4800W), this historic neighborhood is rich with bungalows constructed primarily between 1913 and 1930.

These homes, typically brick construction, 1 ½ stories over the basement, have low hipped roofs and wide overhangs. The stoop and front door are accessed via steps from the front yard, with generous windows, sometimes with lead glass. They are simple straightforward homes influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement.

Homes typically have 2-3 bedrooms on the first floor, and due to the modest size, they are terrific options for first time buyers, young families and empty nesters. The homes can be renovated and expanded with dormers to increase the size of the second floor, and finished English basements can provide great additional living spaces (e.g. rec rooms, bedrooms) as well.

In 2010, This Old House Magazine listed North Mayfair as being one of the best "Old House" neighborhoods in the United States, and “Chicago Magazine” has named it one of Chicago’s Best Neighborhoods.
