River North
Once a bustling industrial area filled with warehouses and factories, River North today is Chicago’s most stylish neighborhood and center for the arts, fashion, and design. Part of the Near North Side area, River North is distinctively urban, hosting many of Chicago’s top art galleries, restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues.

- An art mecca
The warehouses that formerly defined the neighborhood have been converted into present day art galleries, studios, workspaces, and condos. With the exception of Manhattan in New York City, the River North area has the highest concentration of art galleries throughout the United States. Must-visits include Addington Gallery, Andrew Bae Gallery, Jean Albano Gallery, and Carl Hammer Gallery.
- THE MART
THE MART is a massive commercial building housing a host of creative and technologically innovative companies. As home to over 250 showrooms representing the best design companies in North America, THE MART is also an important institution in the region’s design industry. The 25 story, 4.2 million square foot building also hosts numerous shops and restaurants, events venues, and the offices of giant tech and Fortune 500 companies.
- Electric nightlife
River North is known as a nightlife powerhouse, thanks to the high concentration of bars, clubs, lounges, and other night spots. Whether you want a quiet nightcap after watching a show or all-night partying with DJ music blasting the scene, you’ll find plenty of options in River North. The top places to go include Hubbard Inn for classic cocktails, El Hefe for a night of tacos and tequilas, and the Indian inspired Bar Goa, for a touch of something different.
