Lakewood Balmoral Historic District

Lakewood Balmoral Historic District

Lakewood Balmoral is an oasis in the city – between Foster (5200N) and Bryn Mawr (5600N), on Magnolia, Lakewood, and Wayne Streets, are homes built primarily between the 1890’s and 1920’s. In 1899, Cochran (the original developer), offered “some of the best examples of English Gothic, Colonial, Arts & Crafts, Classic Colonial, Queen Anne and French Renaissance of the transition period.” Also found here are Foursquare, Prairie, and brick/stone 2-flats.

Lots in the neighborhood range are primarily 30-50’ wide, with homes that take advantage of this width. It’s common for owners to keep their homes for 20-30 years, so turnover is low. Most home renovations have maintained the historic facades, with rear additions that create kitchen great rooms, and some owners have dug out the basements to create additional living spaces. Excellent private schools such as Sacred Heart/Hardy Prep and The Waldorf School are options for residents in addition to CPS schools.

The Lakewood Balmoral Residents Council is strong, which enhances the strong community feeling in this subdistrict of Andersonville – part of the Edgewater Community of Chicago. Nearby access to Lake Shore Drive makes commuting to the loop easy, with close access to the lakefront biking trail. Shopping is found nearby at the Bryn Mawr Historic Commercial District and the Clark Street shopping district, and the red line and 147 Express Buses are easy options for getting downtown without driving.
